Re: MERF Random Adventure Pictures

Might I suggest a fire wall to you? It provides several benefits. The most obvious one is that it reflects more heat back towards you, it also aids in concealment, dries damp timber and shields the fire from wind. You can build them from rocks, soil or mud as well but your timber stash looks ideal ...

Re: MERF Random Adventure Pictures

your so lucky to have woods in your yard Some woods to play in was pretty high on the house-searching priority list  How'd you sleep in your altered setup? Better than I thought I would, to be honest. The fire was obviously important for warmth, but it was also very helpful psychologically...

Re: MERF Random Adventure Pictures

Not as much an adventure as preparing for future adventures, but last weekend I camped out in the yard and since it was forecast to be a clear night, I decided to not use a tarp. I usually use one for the psychological benefits of cover, even if it's not supposed to be rainy or windy, but conversati...

Re: Hi beorning here!

Welcome!

Based on your impression ideas, it sounds like you might want to take a look at the Beorning woodsman kit Udwin has put together. The references he cites should get you started!

Re: Let's Talk about Legs!

As I understand it, when the Romans marched north they were understandable unused to the cold and adapted the braccae from the "barbarians." After some time had past and the military had adapted the pants, society accepted the new style and they were relatively common in Northern Roman cu...

Re: What's up with wick trimmers?

This blog post repeats what I had heard previously (no citations, mind) - pre-19th century wicks were twisted rather than plaited. The asymmetrical braiding in modern wicks causes the wick to curl as it burns, allowing it to be consumed completely, as opposed to smoking and choking out the flame. To...

Re: Telescope?

this is a question that's always puzzled me as well, in a lot of places middle earth matches up with historical periods quite well however there aren't any mention of lenses even though they existed in medieval times, and I'm not quite sure how you make intricate dwarven engraving or elven jewelry ...

Re: Telescope?

My instinctive response, based on the text, is no, probably not. From what I've seen, there's not any evidence of glass lenses of any kind in the Professor's Middle-earth (PJ's might be a different story, but I'm not terribly interested in his interpretation). In our real-world history, telescopes w...

You might be interested in looking into the ambush tactics used by Gemanic tribes against the Romans in the Battle of Teutoburg Forest ; that's one of the few examples of early guerrilla warfare that I can think of at the moment. To be fair, that was in part an inside job, but you might find it inte...

Re: Looking for a Middle-earth Appropriate Penannular Brooch

If you're looking for something forged, there are a few members here who do various sorts of smithing, if you want to ask them. caedmon - I know Jack does some casting, but I can't remember if he is also a smith (and my forum searching abilities were failing me). I wanted to include him, though! Eri...

Re: In Search of the Many-Rayed Star

Oh no, the "how many points are on a Grey Company star brooch" debate! All is lost! Based on some (old) threads dating back to the first iteration of the forum-wide star with E.MacKermak, I was under the impression that a 6 pointed star was the one most supported by the lore. I t...

Re: Working On a New Jerkin

My apologies, I didn't intend to reignite the debate on the accuracy of jerkins. No need to apologize! There are several topics that come up repeatedly on this forum, and jerkins are definitely one of them. If you're interested, this topic has some discussion of (sparse) textual evidence of the use...

Re: Highlander Survival Equipment

I have such mixed feelings about this project of Mr. Langhorne's. I’ve been watching his videos for a while, and he’s a very talented bushcrafter/survivalist with a well thought out, functional kit that definitely has a period flavor! It's also improved quite a bit over time, especially his blad...

Re: MERF Random Adventure Pictures

I'd always heard of russia sheeting but hadn't seen it before. very interesting, and useful to see its weight listed. Thinking back to the MERS article on trekking with boat or animal support, I could use this info to estimate how much such a shelter would add to your trail weight. As I recall, fab...
