The one problem is that my gear at the moment is quite literally nil, although I may be able to piece together a serviceable kit in time.Peter Remling wrote:It doesn't matter what condition your gear is in.

Re: 2nd Annual MERF Birthday Photo Contest
I doubt I shall have a contest worthy kit in time (alas, Taurinor's pouch may never be mine! ) but I look forward to seeing everyone else's gear and some great shots!

Re: The cost of being a Ranger
I'd also recommend holding off on getting your dream footwear until you finish growing - "period" shoes are expensive! Winingas/leg wraps can do a good job of hiding modern footwear, especially plain leather shoes or boots. I recently got a pair of Hi-Tec Altitudes that were on sale. They...

Re: The cost of being a Ranger
Wow, thanks for all the replies and the wealth of knowledge you've all shared! After reading through what everyone has said I now realise that I can extend (my very minimal!) budget to great ends if I make things myself. Well, now I've got countless projects I can try thanks to all of you!

The cost of being a Ranger
So lately I've been investing a lot of time in looking at all the materials and gear I will need to form my kit, but I wanted to know what (approximately) everyone on this forum has spent on their kit and if they've picked up any money saving tips along the way.

Re: 2nd Annual MERF Birthday Photo Contest
Is there an end date yet or has that not been decided? At this time it's still listed as March 15th. In the past several of the entry times have been extended if there are few entries. At this time of year it's not unusual to extend a time frame mainly due to weather effecting members ability to ge...

Re: Middle Earth Surcote, Ver. 2.0
That surcoat took awesome, I really like the design. I've been planning on making a jerkin or surcoat for some time, but I don't have any kind of template to base it off of. Do you think I could find a similar pattern online? I too have been looking for something like this, but I really want to kno...

Re: Ranger oaths and other items of interest
I know this is a necropost but I really think we should resurrect this idea, and I'm thinking Rifter was on to something with the greeting thing. We could just do something as simple as "Well met" which will cover all Rangers.

Re: Tinderboxes!
I think when you're just getting started, a complete kit from a mass-market house like Jas. Townsend makes sense: http://jas-townsend.com/classic-fire-starting-p-365.html It's not period-perfect, especially for us, but it's a fairly budget way to get started reliably - all the pieces are a known qu...
