Re: Dakota Firehole Experiment Results
I'm very impressed that you picked a below-freezing night for your first overnighter in full kit! "Picked" might be a strong word. Up to now I haven't dared build a fire around here (California), so camping earlier in the year was a no-go, even though my kit was ready. And I didn't know i...

Re: An overnighter in full kit
I also was thinking about how important it could be in the tinderbox-like environment you trek in to have a fire so well contained like that...no need for things to get out of hand! I've been thinking for some time that it would be ideal in nearly all environments in the context of a solo Ranger, t...

An overnighter in full kit
3fDA9ByQaJA Here's the video of my recent trip--my first ever in full gear, which is kind of crazy given how long I've been working on this. Everything worked great--Surprisingly great, really. My garb was comfortable, my tools worked perfectly, and my food was delicious. I managed to sleep warm in...

Dakota Firehole Kotatsu
TL;DR: filling a hole with fire and sleeping on it works way better than you'd think. Last night I spent my first full night out in full kit. I'll be posting a video of the outing, but one thing I wanted to share was a way of using a Dakota Firehole that I haven't seen before...maybe for good reason...

Re: Help me warn Sierra Strider!
I've been informed. Thanks for reaching out. Thankfully, there's good evidence that COVID is not very infectous at all through fomite vectors. The box and its contents should be safe, and definitely will be by Yule.

Re: Elder Cane Spice Bottles
They're each about 4" (10cm) long by ½" (13mm) in diameter. The internal volume is a little more than 4ml, or right around a teaspoon...which is not a ton.

Re: Elder Cane Spice Bottles
I love everything about this! I'm so tempted to try something like this myself, but alas I don't know what I would use them for, as I rarely carry spices when trekking. One other thing that they could be useful for is tinder. Fully waxed, with a waxed, friction-fit stopper, these seem unexpectedly ...

Elder Cane Spice Bottles
In my post on making an elder cane needle case , I mentioned that this technique could be good for other small containers, such as spice bottles. Well, I did it. https://i.imgur.com/lvG11nE.jpg?2 These have a few advantages over glass bottles--first, authenticity. While the very twee little bottles ...

Re: Another thought on boots...
My god, I've never seen anything more slavic... Thank you for sharing that video and improving my day, regardless of what insights it may bring. Regarding the boots, my first thought is that hard leather soles like that are quite slick without hobnails, but I guess you could just add hobnails? The h...

Re: Dwarven short sleeved wool coat - kit update
I did wonder if this would prove to be one of those less functional/looks cool in movies items of kit, although so far I've been surprised by how useful it is. It's not as weatherproof as a cloak but it has advantages: [...] and it has pockets, I don't know if it should have pockets? but they're us...

Small stoppered tubes
After messing with elder canes for a pocket bellows , I started thinking about what else hollow wooden tubing could be used for. I tried making a whistle...that didn't work even a little bit, but while carving fipples for it, I realized that a wooden tube could be quite cool. I reamed the pith out o...

Re: As promised, maps for sale!
New map! This one is of the Lost Coast Trail, and has some of the most fantastic "fantasy' toponyms of any real place I've seen; with names like "Whitethorn", "Shelter Cove" "The King Range" and "The Lost Coast" for that matter, you could practically run ...
