Re: Looking to have my kit critiqued part 2

On the topic of Kuskas, they have the same origin as the viking wooden drinking bowls, and i think they easily can be used as Northman drinking bowls. If you get one in wood, moght be fun to make some waterbird carvings in it. Mine has a reindeer carving on the horn decoration. I like taking inspira...

Re: Looking to have my Kit Critiqued

The short cape looks quite like the one the professor drew for Oarsman #3 in the lakeman drawing.

Re: Looking to have my kit critiqued part 2

We know the Lake-men used long swords, so this sword would fit!

Re: The Garments of the Lake-men.

One other interesting question i had is if the clothes we see tolkien draw the Dwarves in are in fact the ones that were sewn for them in Lake-Town. If that is so, would the lakemen give the dwarves the same breaches as is in use in the west, styled in the same style as the ones they wore earlier? o...

Re: Looking to have my Kit Critiqued

Well you have a great base! I think you could make it become a great barding! The main "critique" is of course materials, but wool is expensive and youve done good so far. Would love too see the green wool tunic, and could easily come with some suggestions if your going for a more barding ...

Re: The Architecture of the Vale of Anduin

Would be interesting to see if it is real glass windows, or just window shutters or small openings in the wall. Would really depend on how common glass is in the region. Om the topic of painted wood, we have references to Meduseld having painted pillars and many-coloured floors. “…the floor was ...

Re: The Architecture of the Vale of Anduin

Hmm, interesting... i do think they might be an inspiration in the more general sense, but i do not see much that look similar to the depiction of Lake Town. Laketown seems largely built out of planks and hewn logs, maybe with help from watermills? One can look at Stavechurches and find many similar...

Re: The Architecture of the Vale of Anduin

Thank you, going to continiue by examining Laketowns and Dales architecture, which is even harder. We only see Old Dale from long away and in ruins, nd new dale w eonly get Gloin's comments in FoTR. Thankfully old Esgaroth is filled to the brim with house shapes, so im trying to compare it to Norse ...

The Architecture of the Vale of Anduin

Here i have Gathered all the mentions or depictions of Architecture in the Vales of Anduin and Western mirkwood. Houses, homesteads and villages of this type would have been scattered all over the place in the Late Third age. One might guess that they extended to the Northern side of Mirkwood. Where...

Re: A Question for Loremasters

Maybe Tudkarl would fit as a title? Karl is an old nirse word for man, seen in Huskarl or Ceorl (latinised). It is also likely the origin of the name Eorl, maybe being a Rohirimised version of Ceorl. Some intersting notes about the Northmen from the hobbit: "beside them came the men of the Lake...

The Ruins at the end of the Forest road?

The forest road ends at quite a weird place, instead of ending at Dale or Erebor, it simply stops at the River Running, with no mention or even hint at a port. Or is there? I was reading an old article about the Hobbit folk tale of the Mewlips. It proposed that the location of the mewlips was at the...

Re: The Elves! The elves! What are we going to do with the Elves!

The poem about Princess Mee states some quite fantastical but still interesting things about her dress; "She had pearls in hair All threaded fair; Of gossamer shot with gold Was her kerchief made, And a silver braid Of stars about her throat. Of moth-web light All moonlit-white..." A gossa...

Re: Revisting Bree

Thank you, i looked at some medieval scottish stone houses as an inspiration, and the Hobbit manors in tolkiens painting. Since the Inn is so old i imagined it would have served as a manor in the old arnorian days, whitewashed and with an luxurious interior, the large arch would likely have served a...

Re: Visual Language of Arnor vs. Gondor?

One other interesint fact is also that Tolkien describes Gondor as "...The Númenóreans of Gondor were proud, peculiar, and archaic, and I think are best pictured in (say) Egyptian terms.’ This text talks more about it, and is interesting in general. http://lotrgfic.com/viewstory.php?action=...
