Mae Govannen my friends!
Mae Govannen my friends!
I am honored to join up with such a diverse, talented and knowledgeable group.
I am from Billings, Montana and I am an admitted Tolkien addict.
I have been interested in Tolkien since I can remember. But it's only been in the last five years that I've felt resurgence of interest and delved into the lengendarium beyond The Hobbit/LOTR Trilogy/Silmarillion. I read everything by Christopher Tolkien that I can get my hands on and research something Tolkien related daily.
Over the years I have wandered (or sauntered according to John Muir) through woods, plains and desert on foot and on horseback using modern gear and techniques as well as period and primitive. I've thrived and suffered - mountain man style, longhunter style and abo style since the early eighties and still there is so much more to learn. Knowledge weighs nothing.
I am familiar with the rigidity of historical re-enactment but I truly like the fact that Tolkien's works, being escapist fantasy, allows for historical accuracy blended with a modicum of individual interpretation and creativity. After all our own real-life ancestors were not - that we know of - influenced by the Valar or elven culture as the Numenoreans were.
My persona is a Ranger of the North.

Re: Mae Govannen my friends!
Welcome, nice looking garb and gear. Can we get a closeup of your star broach ?
Re: Mae Govannen my friends!
Mae govannen, mellon!
Something tells me you will fit right in around here
As it happens, wooow, your garb looks incredible. Extremely well-thought-out, lived-in, and practical, while remaining striking and dramatic in overall appearance. LOVE IT. Sounds like you've got a lot of experience under your belt too! It's great to have you!

Hail, and well met!
Not to parrot the sentiment of others, but I, too, am really impressed by your garb. Having just started putting mine together, I can only hope to look as good, one day.
Also, I love the statement "Knowledge weighs nothing"! I might have to abscond with that one.
*edit for misspelling. Gotta remember to proofread before hitting that Submit button.

Re: Mae Govannen my friends!
So sorry I didn't get to this sooner!
Well met, and welcome! Your opinion of how Historical Reenactment and Tolkien can (and do) play nicely together pretty much mirrors the goals of this group, so I have no doubt that you'll fit in here nicely.
When you get a chance, take some photos of your kit broken down and type up some descriptions of how you arrange things; love to see more!

And might I say that you put me in mind of a young, strapping Theoden, out on a hunt or during a stint with the Rangers of Ithilian!Ringulf wrote:Wonderful kit and very convincing persona! Please be welcome Brother!

Thank you kindly Ringulf. "Young and strapping" perhaps in Dunedain years onlyRingulf wrote:And might I say that you put me in mind of a young, strapping Theoden, out on a hunt or during a stint with the Rangers of Ithilian!Ringulf wrote:Wonderful kit and very convincing persona! And thank you as well Greg. I started working on some quick pics til I saw your post about the Wiki pages

Very impressed with the work that has been done there so far.
It may take me a week or so of but I'll make the time and get some more in depth stuff put together.

Manveruon, the star brooch is something that I stumbled across on Etsy for $30 and it took forever to find something that I was happy with. It was posted as being sterling silver. The back of it is stamped with the number "10" then the word "Sterling" below. The way I understand these things it possibly means that it is 10% Sterling plating, perhaps over brass. It sure does tarnish like silver though, plated or not.
I wasn't concerned about the number of points since there is no real definitive description regarding them. What was a must for me was something that represented rays since Tolkien's description was a "rayed star" (not "many-rayed star", which I believe to be a misquote). It's the lines and facets on and between the points of this brooch that was the deciding factor for me. I'm very happy with it.
