The Riddle Game

Several years ago, I participated in a Tolkien themed riddle game on a different forum. It was a lot of fun... participants would compose and solve riddles together. I thought it might be nice to revive it over here.

We don't really need any rules. I suppose it would be best to aim for only having one riddle up at a time, though. When the answer to that is revealed, a new riddle can be posted by whoever would like to post one. Riddles do not need to be Tolkien themed, but most of them probably will be.

I have about thirty-five riddles saved in a document that I wrote years ago for that game. Most of them I find quite embarrassing, but I'm going to post them anyway, just for fun. When composing poetry, I now write uncompromisingly metrically, just because I like an orderly style. When I wrote these, I had no regard for meter, consistency, or a lot of other things. These are basically the uncouth scrawlings of a 12-year-old Ernildhir. And I will probably keep reminding you of how embarrassed I am by them. But sometimes embarrassment must be put aside to have some fun, so get ready for a slew of four-year-old riddles!

I hope you will enjoy them, and please feel free to post any of your own whenever there is not an active riddle.

We'll start with an easy one.

A thing of great worth,
All did admire,
Found deep in the earth,
Hoarded by fire,
After worm was not 'live,
'Twas found in his hoard,
Then was battle of five,
Now lies with Dwarf-Lord.

That is of course correct, Mirimaran.

I'll probably default to taking about a week after one of my riddles is solved before posting another, just so they'll last, and we won't blow through all of them in a few days.

P.S. not that I have anything against unmetrical poetry or riddles... there can be some extremely beautiful free-style poetry. It's just not usually my personal preference.

Small and white tis it
Some time shaded green
Taken on long or short treks
It's generally unseen!

Many lines written, but no end in sight
waiting for others in the dead of the night
hoping for responses but nary a thing
maybe it'll be finished by next Spring!

What is it? :P

Actually I was looking for handkerchief.

White roots travel upwards
From a mountain of grey
rains falls down from clear skies
Thunder sounds when they lay
