The Greatest Dare of the Great Fast Hare

Post by Mirimaran »

Hi all,

This is the full poem that is referenced in a short story I started called, Ranger of the North, that is here in the Bard Stage posts. It only took 5 years to write lol here it is in its entirety!

The Greatest Dare of the Great Fast Hare

Once there was a great fast hare
who always escaped noose and snare
but one eve the hunter he'd thought to dare
the arrow drawn and brought to bear!

The arrow whined and missed the mark
the hare danced and on a lark
ran round the hunter and with a bark
jumped in a hole round and dark!

The hunter grew angry and smoked the hole
and the fire took its toll
as that hunter flushed hare and mole
and awoke a sleeping troll!

The troll was hungry but not for hare
the flesh of man he longed to tear
his knobby club he brought to bear
and the hunter knew his evil stare!

The hunter and hare now the same
as he now was the running game
and on the hare he laid the blame
when the troll's fell blow came!

The hare hung his head low
as the hunter was taken in tow
by the troll took him down below
his fate none would ever know.

Then came the greatest dare
of that wily and brave little hare
for the hunter's fate he'd share
if he could not get them both out of there!

Into the hole he hopped quick
down in the dark, the trail wet and slick
the tunnel echoing his paw's click
as he contemplated his greatest trick.

He came upon the troll ready to dine
on the hunter, his blood like wine
the troll's teeth would grind his bones fine
what little the troll had (they numbered nine).

"Excuse me" said the brave hare
"but that's my dinner you have there!
I won him fair and square
so, if you please, he's mine to prepare!"

The troll looked up, he looked confused
that a hare, a hare! would choose
to challenge him, he would beat and bruise
that long eared fellow, he would lose!

"He is mine" came his slow reply
"I see nothing of your bly
about 'im, so you best fly
before I decide that both of you fry!"

The hare just sat there and cleaned his ears
while his heart pounded with fear
but he was brave and said, loud and clear
"You couldn't catch me in a thousand years!"

The troll stood up and roared!
from his mouth curses poured
and then he leapt and tried to score
the hare, but he was faster by more!

Round and round that hare ran
the troll's legs had greater span
but empty was his frying pan
for the hare had a plan!

Up the hole that hare leapt
after him the Troll crept
at the top, sunlight swept
and ever after, that Troll slept.

They left as friends from the Troll's lair
ever after the hunter would share
the tale of the greatest dare
of his friend, the great fast hare.
