The Prettiest Girl at the Pony!

Post by Mirimaran »

Hail friends of old! This is an old tune sung at the Pony, legend tells of a girl who worked there who waited for her Ranger to return from the Wild, and never did so. Remember them when you sing this some late eve!

The Prettiest Girl at the Pony

There's an Inn in Bree called the Prancing Pony
where works a great beauty
skin like cream and right at the seams
to serve us is her duty!

Her hair is as long as a drunk dwarf's song
and as dark as mountain shadows
her eyes so bright like the stars at night
and her smile greets all fellows!

She always brings cheer with the brown beer
and listens to jest or worry
quick with a joke or to light your smoke
she's always in a hurry!

She'll dance a jig and then take a swig
from bottle, flask, or flagon
she'll sing you a tune under the moon
and then hitch up your wagon!

If you dare a kiss from this miss
or a dance with this maiden
for her lips so red many a man has bled
and a sweetheart has been forsaken!

Broken hearts she leaves every late eve
and wakes men from their slumbers
a dream they dare of the girl with dark hair
and wake their wives with their murmurs!

As the last drunk heaves her smile slowly leaves
as she is the last of the lonely
she bars the door and then sweeps the floor
the prettiest girl at the Pony!
"Well, what are you waiting for? I am an old man, and have no time for your falter! Come at me, if you will, for I do not sing songs of dastards!"

I've been slowly working on putting a few of David's Norse poems into a sort of sea-shanty singable chant, but they're all rather dark sounding. I'd like to give this one a try. It sounds like it'd do well with a good hobbity bounce, likable enough to be heard as far from bree as the Green Dragon. May I, my good sir?

Of course! I'd love that, and you still have the other one as well. I just published the poem over on FB, so you can see she who inspires it!

The melodie of this song would not be set to the tune of "Brandy" would it?
