Wow! One of your first projects was your own BOOTS?! You're ambitious!
Great start - I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Wow, ambitious is right! I suggest getting a pair of heavy needles and look up how to do a saddle stitch. The whip stitch you're using now will technically hold things together, but if you want any kind of durability, go with the 2-needle saddle.
Here's my boilerplate advice for those just starting out on such ventures.
Here's my boilerplate advice for those just starting out on such ventures.
You can have it NOW.
You can have it CHEAP.
or you can have it 'RIGHT'.
But Choose Carefully, because you only get two of the three!
If you want it Now and Cheap, it will be poor quality (eventually costing you more time/$ in the long run to replace).
If you want it Now and Right, it will be expen$ive.
You can get it Cheap and Right, but you will have to cultivate some Patience--combing thrift shops, yardsales, swapmeets &c. for the perfect materials, keeping your eyes open for the right price, and always researching!, plus maybe even spending time gaining some valuable Skills--sewing, metal/leather/wood-working, &c.--enabling you to produce your own gear you can be proud of.

Nice work, I like the portmanteau. Now you need to get some neetsfoot oil and oil the heck out of all that veg tan leather. You said that you went to Springfield Leather, are you in Missouri? I'm in Arkansas.
Is you knife backwards in it's sheath?

Yeah I'm in southern Missouri about an hour from Springfield and yes it's possible that I accidentally made a left handed knife sheath even though I'm right handed. Thanks everyone for the good words and recommendations!

Welcome, and nice work! I agree - definitely a good idea to put some neatsfoot oil on the leather, or some other kind of finish. But wow, that's a lot of work you've put in there! I look forward to seeing further projects!

Welcome to MERF! Beware, now that you've begun making your own kit you'll never want to stop.

It only requires a meeting if you decide that it's a problem.

Re: Workings of a New Kit
Looking good, Derrick! We all start out the same way, I think. We know what we want, we just have to figure out how to get it. I think one's kit and garb are always evolving, and in that evolution a story of one's life can be told. One day those boots may be gone, or endlessly repaired, or that case might have been broken in and aged, and in that time a Ranger's tale comes and goes. Hope to see more from you!
