I have used a handful of tarp configurations. But there are many more:

Re: Tarp Configurations
Wow! Very cool.
There are no safe paths in this part of the world. Remember you are over the Edge of the Wild now, and in for all sorts of fun wherever you go.
Re: Tarp Configurations
Here is an excellent series on tarps. The first one deals with materials (we would use canvas or oilskin) and the last two deal with configurations.
Re: Tarp Configurations
I've got two different tarp set-ups that I like to use - one that is closed off for bad weather/when I can't have a fire, and one that is open for use with a campfire.
Here's a video from Far North Bushcraft and Survival showing the closed one:
I use the first set up, not the modified set up. It's not sealed up, but it has a door and a floor.
Here's my 8'x8' tarp set up like that -
I was setting up on a sand tent pad, so it's not as taut as it could be if I had been able to tie off to trees. I piled leaves underneath the floor and piled leaves along the side where the floor and wall meet to keep the wind out.
I learned the open set-up from this video:
It's protected from the wind on 3 sides, and has a floor.
That's my 8'x8' set up in that configuration (sans leaf bedding; I was practicing in the yard). It has plenty of room for me, but I'm only 5'2" - a taller person might need to use a larger tarp.

Re: Tarp Configurations
I like the first set up for the rain.
I've seen the second video in the past.
I got a Tentsmith's 10' x 10' Oilskin tarp so that I could incorporate a floor if I needed too.
I don't like using my "good" tarps on the ground with weight on them. I know that they are durable, but I think it can compromise the tarp's waterproofness.
Those Oilskin Tarps are expensive!

Here is a discussion of Oilcloth versus Canvas:
