Interesting 16th c. jackware flask

Hard Kit is all other accoutrements that are not clothing, weapons or armour. This includes pots and tents, and flint & steel, and other things like that.

Interesting. Looks like an ivory stopper.

Hunh. Sometimes it's the real stuff that's the weirdest.

Do we know what it was for? How big it is?

The handle and base remind me somewhat of 18th c. fire buckets, but it's obviously not that.

Liquid? gunpowder? weird!

Ok, I found something. It's an Ottoman Matara. A water flask/canteen used by the Turks in the 16th c. It's shape is from being made from the hind quarters of an animal, the 'horns' are the legs.

Hunh - I see it now. Interesting efficiency of materials. I wonder how often/how well that top leg actually gets filled though? And I wonder how the cords were used?
What an odd, interesting design.

I doubt it really does. More of a pouring handle, like a pitcher, etc. than extra volume.
