Bad form...you always swing away from the horse's head lest you screw up and kill your own mount.

I don't recall the source, but I remember seeing an illustration of a young knight in training, by sitting on the end of a pivoted beam (instead of a horse). This would cause the knight and his "horse" to move in a circle like a carousel, approaching the target on every pass.
