So I'm in the enviable(?) position of "buy what toys you can now, because you're about to go into a years-long 'be responsible' phase."
Anyhow, one of those toys is a proper bow.
In the perfect world it would be an WETA-elven-ish recurve scaled down to modern recurve dimensions (55-60") , minus all the vine tracery foofaraw in a gorgeous redbrown magical wood. In the real world it will be something a touch more mundane (not least 'cause it won't be made out of rubber like the film props ) - but I still think I want to get a bit more romantic than a plain old flatbow.
Budget is around $400 - lesser is nice, more is... hard to manage.
Anyone got a suggestion for craftsmen or vendors to look into?

Not sure if it fits your budget, or if it lends itself to recurves, but there's a beautiful wood from Australia called jarrah that is reddish-brown and can be made into longbows.

these are all options that I've heard good things about from folks that I know who like to either make their own or finish up a bow that use them for both hunting and target competitions.

I've got a bow from here - www.bowskin.com
He also sells products through Crows Head Archery, but Bowskin is the bowyer's own site. I was able to get a little bit of customization by contacting him directly (horn tips on a bow the website didn't offer them as an option on).
He builds some elven-inspired recurves, but I'm not sure what the lengths on them are, and they're painted with the leaves and whatnot. You'd think the painting would be one of the easiest things to customize, though, especially if the desired customization is "Leave it off".

Re: Got a bowyer recommendation?
I can speak for Crows Head. I have three of theirs, well, our family does. Inexpensive, they perform well, and they are simple bows. We have, if memory serves, the Mohawk bow, the Algonquin bow, and the Ranger bow. So far I can find no fault with them.
For what it is worth.
