Handmade bracers

A central place to talk about weapons and armour, as it relates to your kit. This is where you show it of or talk about making it. Discussing the relative merits of types of weapons goes in the WMA section.

Handmade bracers

Post by Ghostsoldier »

Since others have seen it dutiful to post their latest acquisitions of Ranger gear, I humbly offer my meager contribution of leather arm guards/bracers/gauntlets for your viewing pleasure.

I crafted these myself, using patterns gleaned from the internet, and a design elements that I composited using Aragorn’s crown motif form the Return Of The King, and Boromir’s bracers; I used the star as the central thematic element, since I’m not particularly drawn to the Tree of Gondor indicia.

This was my first foray into leatherworking, but it won’t be my last; although I’ve purchased enough tools that I could probably start my own shop, I plan on making another set for myself based loosely on the Faramir pattern, I’m not about to venture into the world of commercial production...there’s just too much work involved (although I can now see how they justify the high cost of these bracers, as they are extremely labor-intensive).

All that remains is for me to add some black antiquing wash to the details to make them ‘pop’, and to coat them with some Resolene for preservation. Enough of my rambling....behold the photos:

your leather tooling is so detailed and professional that I'm having a lot of trouble believing this
Gimli: It's true you don't see many Dwarf-women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for Dwarf-men.
Aragorn: It's the beards.

... dang! That's amazing tooling, especially for a first go! Wowsers!
I really like that little pear-pebbly background. Nice and subtle.

Well done!

W O W. :O

These turned out INCREDIBLY nice! Well done sir! Having made a pair of replica Boromir/Aragorn ones for myself a couple years back I know what's involved, and it's no simple task!

Thank you for all of your kind words; building these was definitely a labor of love, but not one that I would enter into again lightly, especially for profit...it's fun to do for a hobby, but I don't want to make a business of it. :P

Looks incredible!

Now I wish I would have attempted something similar instead of buying them online :)

Very true! I’m making a medieval leather pouch this weekend so once I get my leathercraft skills back up I’ll go for it :)

Sweet Eru on a pogo stick, I'm feeling good about making bags that are roughly bag-shaped and then I see stuff like this! That tooling is gorgeous!
