Your Weapons

Post by Andy M »

These are what I have.

The Spike Axe

Axe from Paul Chamagne based off of 10th C. find.

Medium and hand axe-heads are from Bosnia. I did the ash handles.

Paul Chen Seax with new handle

Paul Champagne Long Seax, 22" blade.

I know there are a few posts about gear, but to be honest, I just like to see what guys train with and use.

A majority of what I have right now is in the knife catagory, of which I have about a dozen, though I only really carry 4 that are practical.

I have multiple bows, but in terms of ranger-dome my english long bow(58", 45# at 31") would be the one.

I also have a gorhka army issue kukri.

On the "not for rangers and don't really camp with them" list is a Katana gifted me by Gareth, and an assortment of boken and wooden sparring weapons of Asian background(2 boken, 2 knife, a shinai, a chinese short sword, and a chinese broadsword). All technically for practice, but if necessary could be used effectivly.

THe weapon I ahve found myself most pleased with in training lately is my 180+cm waxwood staff. Its for kungfu, but I find it suits me well and I am comfortable with its defensive and offensive capacity. I am considering making a spear-head for it.

On my "to buy list" in terms of practical use and training would be a long saex, a celtic short sword, an english long sword, a larger/long kukri(forgot the name), and a turkish horsebow, as well as a decent set of throwing knives.

I will post photos of this all at a later date...:)

Hey Mike,

How do you like the Solingen? How is it when cutting?

Peter,

Do you have a vault?

I will always carry the bow when possible. I like having the stand-off capability and the hunting tool.

Mine is a 75lb raw-hide backed hickory flatbow from ancient archery. I make and carry 11/32 ash shafts, shield back fletching, 165gr. field points or 250gr bodkins.

Hey Andy,

She's very neutral feeling to me in hand. I picked her up for I:33 work which she happens to excel at. Like any sword in cutting she won't do the work for you, and she's not very forgiving of bad edge alignment. All in all I've been very happy with her as a single hander and don't regret the purchase at all. Of course when I picked up the museum line swords I have prices weren't quite so high.

Okay, here's mine:

DN1317 double-fullered longsword from Gus Trim with a basic Fletcher hilt (bow-tie crossguard, wire on leather on cord for the grip)

Cold Steel Norse Hawk, modified. (Head epoxied in place, black finish sanded off, metal patina'd a greyish brown, handle stained a mottled brown, edge re-bevelled)

A six-foot spear, maple shaft (an actual sapling, not a turned stave), arrowhead-shaped blade.

A Mora knife by Frost, four inch blade, birch handle, leather sheath.

A Buck "Special" knife, six inch blade, phenolic handle (I need to leather-wrap that somehow to make it look period)

I'm fairly satisfied with this set-up, though I want to add a bow and a Paul Binns seax to the mix in the future.

Hey Mike,

Good to hear. I've thought about the single edged Viking blade they make.

Chris, I've got to see some pics of that Spear.

Let's see:
Albion Clontarf
Tinkerswords cross between Glamdring and Narsil
a bearded axe that I ground out of an old wood-cutting axehead fitted with a hickory handle that I cut down, drilled and decorated with leather lace.
40# 68" bamboo longbow
In the works is a small sgian dubh forged from a file and a camp knife forged from another 12" file. We'll see how these two work out.
I already know the bow won't be very practical in the woods. But it's a starter for me.
I'll try to get pics later this week.

I'll try to get some up tomorrow. The hilt is somewhat like Glamdring while I believed at the time that the blade was more like Narsil. I liked the hilt of Glamdring but was not so fond of the leaf blade. On the other hand, I liked the blade of Narsil, but not the hilt so much. The pommel is a different story. It's just round and plain at the present. Tinker's engraver was broken so he was not able to do the engraving I requested. Later, the sword will go back to him for finishing. The sword is 2.75 lbs. I think that is as heavy as the Clontarf, but it feels much lighter.
I'll let you be the judge of whether it fits both swords or not.
BTW, She still isn't named. Don't know what to name her yet.

Andy,

how did you dismount that paul chen seax? Is it threaded or did you just go to town and break the grip off? I've been wanting to do something with that seax but first I'd need to take that furniture off.

Hey Mike,

The pommel was threaded. It was just a matter of unscrewing it. I'm thinking about breaking that handle off and grining the hilt portion of the blade so that it is perpindicular to the hilt. I like the blade. It's a good solid piece of steel.
