Swords and Daggers

Post by Daerir »

http://www.strongblade.com/
I was snooping around the other day looking for a plain sword and stumbled across this website. Has anybody used it or heard of it before? It seems promising and legitimate.

I've seen it before, but I'm not terribly familiar with it. I would probably recommend checking out Kult of Athena, myself. They're awesome.

Strongblades are a legit company. They make very durable swords. They are not terribly authentic and have a tendency to be heavy, not have a distal taper and of my opinion fairly ugly swords.

Definitely take a look at KOA: http://www.kultofathena.com/

KOA carries just about every decent and some not so decent production swords. From Deepeeka to Albion they have it and generally at the best prices. Their customer service is top notch.

KoA tends to be my go-to outfit for most things to do with ancient or medieval mayhem. ;) I even have a sallet and bevor from GDFB out of there. Don't buy many weapons any longer, although I have my eye on a nice pole hammer, but I do recommend their stuff. They carry the gamut, so be wary of good and bad, but their service is excellent.

How is their prices though? I just want a simple sword, nothing to fancy, and I don't really want to spend more than $200.

They go from inexpensive wall hangers through several hundred dollar fully functional versions, and everything in between.

Go look at their site: http://kultofathena.com/

I have no idea what your budget is, or what you intend to use it for. Go look at their site and see for yourself if anything fits your needs.

I bought a dagger and a coustille from Strongblade last fall for my boys. They are as reported; heavy and with no elegance in the blade geometry department. But they are great size for hobbits going into the woods and fighting imaginary Orcs. And I don't have to worry about them breaking while hacking down willow saplings.

It looks like a nice costume blade, and the price is certainly right for that application. It's stainless steel, though, so you aren't going to be able to do any cutting with it. Depending on the tang construction, you may not even want to swing it around too much.

Yeah--if you're just going to wear it as a prop, that's fine. But you don't want to hit anything with a stainless steel sword, because the steel is too hard, and therefore, too brittle. It makes great knives, but a sword has different stress points and needs to flex.

If you want a sword that you can hit things with, whether for sparring or for test cutting, you want to look for the words "high carbon steel." It's even better if they tell you what kind of steel it is, and what Rockwell Hardness it's tempered to.

Go for it. It's a very decent entry level sword. That particular model has gotten some great reviews.

If you want a personal reference, I have one and don't intend to sell it any time soon. It's a good choice.
