Finally got around to reading that article! Good stuff, overall! I've seen the author around the web quite a bit over the years - really top-notch reenactor, and pretty incredible with a bow!

The article makes brief mention of firemaking by friction, but I've yet to see clear evidence of this ever happening in Europe.
