I'm starting to get the grape vines done up for the year's growth, and I hope to get a decent amount of wine bottled this year.
And while most of it is going into modern bottles, I'd love to do a dozen or so Middle-earth friendly "Amon Lendel" bottles.
Thing is, I don't know if that's plausible, or what they should look like, or how to get them. (I'd love love love to find or have made a dozen or so on the pattern the PJ crew used for that "Dorwinion Wine" crew gift. )

We know from songs and such that the Hobbits have (presumably glass) bottles and corks, and there's a reference to bottles in the wreck of Isengard from Saruman's stores - from the Shire, I would assume.
Also there's the "leather bottle of wine" an invisible Bilbo filches from the Lakemen after the barrel ride - though I suspect that was more a workman's field portion rather than a storage bottling.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on what might have been used in Eriador, and especially in the Angle or Breelands?
I presume the most historically plausible solution might be that wine went straight from aging barrels to cups, but I'd still love your thoughts!

I’d go with something from Historical Glassworks.

Probably from the Middle Eastern or Early American lines.





Alternately, for a bit less money, Dansk Mjod Mead comes in a rustique earthenware bottle that might fit the bill.

Caedmon - yes, exactly! It might not be the most practical, but it is lovely.
I ran into a glassblower at an SCA gathering earlier this year, and just pinged her about making some. Hopefully it's doable.
If that falls through, the vinegar ones do look interesting - cool!

Gulli - wow! Neat stuff! Especially if I make a hobbity vintage one of these years.

I discovered the Townsend offerings are Depeeka - this little flask I is from them in fact. I was hoping it would be rounder in cross section rather than flat, but I misread the product photo. Still it's a nice thing to have around.



One of the tricks is the corking - if you look on the Dorwinion bottle, it has a nice solid rim around the neck for the corking machine to hold on to. The Depeeka ones don't: which might be more historically correct, but definitely makes bottling a trickier business.

Anyhow.. onward.

I have No idea about designs, but I can say that what I believe is the only direct use of "glass" comes from Thorin, referring to hobbits' ignorance between the difference between jewels and glass beads. So I would think it a safe bet that dwarves are the source of glass in Eriador at least.

Some beautiful work. I'm also pleased that I can understand 95%+ of the Czech. "Nizozemi" took me a minute.

my son just got back from a school trip on the East Coast, Colonial Jamestown has a Glass Blowing Shop, and they sell online. A lot of Wine bottles, mostly green and cobalt.

First if you every get the chance to visit the Jamestown Museum, do so. Fantastic immersive experience and great museum.
