Kinda cold for them I think but they're still green!

How sweet and tiny! I see a stake, so I assume you're growing them.

I can't tell from the picture - is it maple?

You got it! They are maple! We have a couple of them growing. Only about a year old. But they survived the first winter.

What a joy to see a tree you planted growing healthy and strong many years later. :)

Here's the little fella who's still alive. Still going strong.

Not having much knowledge of cold climate growing, could you rig some sort of plastic greenhouse around them to help them through the winter?

Or they grow stronger if they survive on their own merits?

Wow yeah I never thought about a green house! That's a great idea! The other one died from getting run over by the snowplow. But this little fella seems to be weathering the winters pretty good so far. Great idea! Now I gotta look that up!

Ok so I guess they're really tough and dont need to be babied during the winter. That they actually do need to be left alone.

I did wonder if that may be the case, trees are all unique. A huge portion of trees here in Australia actually require bushfire (wildfire) to open their seed pods and regenerate.

Perhaps a large stake near him may at least discourage the marauding snowplow?

Lol no joke! This one is protected pretty well where its located but yeah we wanna keep it safe. A big stake is a great idea.

Very cool!

What we do with new trees that we really want to see make it:

1. put down weed barrier and woodchip mulch for around 2' around the sapling. Not strictly necessary, especially if the little guy has made it this far - but it cuts down the competition early on.
2. put in a stick of some kind as a trainer and LOOSELY bind the tree to it. Make sure there's lots of room for growth, and make a point of looking in on it every so often: the last thing you want to do is strangle your tree!
3. surround the mulched area with three steel fenceposts. This keeps things from accidentally running into it, and is ideal for mounting fencing to in the event you're worried about deer. (I don't know if they go after maple, but they absolutely devastated one of my apple trees our first year here.) The posts can come out after ~5 years when the tree's big enough to shake off a bit of browsing.

Good stuff, Elleth.

Something that I like to do is add Mycorrhizal Fungi.

It aids in root development and tree health.
