I suspected someone of your experience would have had something going but couldn't see signs.

Personally I think rocks work, and I would give a screen like this a trial but only if I could daub the gaps with mud or clay.
A lattice would simply leak heat.

I absolutely believe that rocks would help, but I haven't personally tried them yet. Provided that they aren't porous and wet, rocks be positioned closer to the fire than a wooden screen and have much more mass, which should allow them to absorb and then radiate heat.

After a lot of mild wet weather, Fall has arrived late this year in the UK, normally by Halloween the tree's hardly have any leaves left

yep, allowed to go shopping although all non-essential shops are closed, and were allowed to drive somewhere for exercise once a day, providing we don't drive for longer than half an hour, that cuts out all my favourite adventure places :(
