New Water Bottle

Post by Greg »

Finally got around to making a new water bottle, to fix yet another one of those little tiny non-authentic details. My old one, now in Ernildir's possession, was pretty big, a necessity in California where water isn't as plentiful year 'round. But now I'm in Indiana, and you can always find a pool somewhere along any dry creek bed, so we've reduced our size a bit for the sake of weight and convenience.

It was stuffed with sand, and lined with Brewer's Pitch. The cordage is a hand-braided hemp line, and the plug and mouthpiece are hand-turned oak, courtesy of my dad's lathe back home. All hand-stitched with waxed linen thread. Total capacity: 4 Cups. Not bad at all.

Very nice Greg!
After I finish up the costrels, I swore to myself I was going to set up that flacket jig that Odigan had up in an article.
I like the simplicity of this type of bottle. The simpler the construction the more time you can spend in decoration...or use if you should be so lucky!!!

Looks very efficient! I think I'll have to try making a new one myself one of these days. XD

Been wanting to make one of these for a looooong time. Nicely done!

Incidentally, how exactly is the mouth of it designed? What's holding the wooden piece in? etc.

Looks good, Greg! I have one that I bought years ago at Faire, but would love to tackle this one day!

Looks really nice! How's the cord doing on your shoulder with the weight? I've commissioned a ceramic bottle of that style among other things and I wove a broader strap so it doesn't press so badly and that'll be on top of the scarf I keep around my neck.

Good job Ranger!
In the darkest part of Sherwoods glade, in the thickest part of the wood, there are those who say, can still be seen, the ghost of Robin Hood.

Cord does just fine...it rides on top of my cloak, and I don't even notice it. Thanks for the braid tutorial, by the way...I'm braiding more as I type for a new in-kit hawking leash.
