I wanted to make a small pouch as my first "foray" into leatherworking. I couldn't find a design I thought I could make, so I decided to draw my own, similar to a drawstring pouch. Peter Remling was kind enough to send a ton of leather and tools, so I had some good materials to start with.

I cut the leather with the scissors, and punched holes for stitching around the edge.

The stitching was very rough, I intended to stitch the pouch inside out, then pull it out.

I had some thick square lace from some old boots, and used it to create a drawstring close on the top, and a loop to secure the flap over the top. This worked a lot better than I expected it to. The round "Celtic beast" decoration was also from Peter.

I could have done better on the stitching, but I am pleased with my final result, I have room to improve my leatherworking skill.

Re: First leatherworking project
That's a great start - it looks a lot better than my first attempts!
If you can bear to do it, may I recommend taking out the existing stitch between the front and the back and resewing it with a saddle stitch?

You'll find it makes a much tighter, stronger seal and I think you'll be much happier with it.
Great start!
(Fun, ain't it? )

That does look cleaner and nicer, if I find more time, I might try it.Elleth wrote:

Nice job. If you follow Elleth's suggestion, you won't have open seams showing on the sides once you turn it right side out.
Very good first project.
