That is fascinating - how wonderful to see an illustration from period of it being done.

What are the white things? A kind of primitive match / ember catcher thing?

The white lines? They look to be either some kindling, or perhaps spalls to my eyes.
Now the sword shall come from under the cloak.

Interesting. To my eyes, I immediately thought of twice-dipped candle wicks!
