This is a subject that has gotten my attention lately, and I did a little research about it. Being able to estimate time in the dark watches of the night, would be a handy woodcraft skill for Rangers to know.
Basically, the position of the moon in the sky, combined with its phase, gives clues about the location of the sun on the other side of the Earth, thus allows you to estimate the hour of night.
