Re: Happy hobbit day!
Oh and I'd like you to start a thread on more Dwarven proverbs !

Listen then my Beardlings, to the wisdom of the Elders, so that you may in your time prosper.

A Proverb of War:

Top and front should be clad in steel,
for your back to a foe you shall Naught reveal!

I am Ringulf the Dwarven Woodsman, I craft leather, wood, metal, and clay,
I throw axes, seaxes, and pointy sticks, And I fire my bow through the day.
Come be my ally, lift up your mead! We'll search out our foes and the Eagles we'll feed!

A Proverb of War:

Take Pride in your helm, Oh Naugrim,

when a foe looks down on the Khazad in Battle,

it is the last thing that will be seen!

There are many Dwarven proverbs, mostly about war, honor, crafting, relationships and Gold or wealth. Some can be applied to a multitude of subjects such as this on, normally listed in the Book of Wealth:

A Dwarven Proverb of Wealth

One nut in
a box of tin
makes but little sound,

Two nuts bring forth
a greater din
for a brother now is found.

One nut in
a box of tin
makes but little sound,

Three nuts rattle
like the sounds of battle
and gathers a host around.

One nut in
a box of tin
makes but little sound,

A host of nuts
will multiply till
an army takes the ground!

One nut in
a box of tin
makes but little sound,

An army of nuts
puts a King on his throne
and wealth shall surely abound!

Dwarven proverbs were written through the ages to inspire the Naugrim to right living, according to the traditions and values of it's people.

Here is another:

All that we do
casts a shadow
back along the line
Of our fathers
to its beginning.

These three seemed to be carved by the same Rune-smith, A woodworker before he explored the mystery of the Stav, His thoughts and runes have influenced many cultures

3 proverbs of wealth:

A bit of rest,
a bit of sleep,
and the folding of the hands,

Will bring to you
quick poverty,
like armed brigands.

Smelt your ore in the morning
withhold not your hammer.
For one does not know
when we go to war.

See you the master craftsman?
He'll not stand before the obscure.
He and his work shall ever be
the desire of kings to be sure.

Hmm... the first sounds a lot like Proverbs 24:33-34 and the third like 22:29. I like.
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

A Dwarve's honor is paramount to his existence, many things dictate the status of ones honor, but none more than living a correct lifestyle.
To this end many Dwarven proverbs are designed as guidelines for correct paths of word, deed and action.

Let
All that you think
All that you say
All that you do
to the end of your days

Be
Forged of Honor
Tempered with Grace
Then in the Halls
of your Fathers
You will find a place.

A dwarf's ale and red meat is key to a good meal!

Pass the pint,
Pass the meat!
Drink it down,
while we eat!
Here I stand...unbowed, unbent, unbroken.

A heartening sight by Day or Night,
Dwarven warriors bold!

To add their Might to any Fight,
Precious more than Gold!

A Dwarven friend is to the end,
Never shall they fail!

Their word does not bend, wherever they wend,
through Cavern, Hill or Dale!
