I think that Chris hit the nail on the head. The Dunedain utterly refuse to give up their cultural birthright and I think that they would keep the old songs and tales as much as they could. At least the Elves would be there to make sure that over time they didn't lose the meaning of the words. In the Gunslinger, "Hey Jude" is played on a player piano, if I remember right. Somehow now, I can picture Strider singing "Pokerface" to the hobbits

'No!' said Strider interrupting, 'I do not think that tale should be told now with the servants of the Enemy at hand. If we win through to thehouse of Elrond, you may hear it there, told in full.'

'Then tell us some other tale of the old days,' begged Sam; 'a taleabout the Elves before the fading time. I would dearly like to hear moreabout Elves; the dark seems to press round so close.'

'I will tell you the tale of Gaga,' said Strider, 'in brief - forit is a long tale of which the end is not known; and there are none now, except Elrond, that remember it aright as it was told of old. It is a fairtale, though it is sad, as are all the tales of Middle-earth, and yet it maylift up your hearts.' He was silent for some time, and then he began not to speak but to chant softly:

wanna hold em like they do in Texas please
Fold em let em hit me raise it baby stay with me, I love it
Luck and intuition play the cards with Spades to start
And after he's been hooked I'll play the one that's on his heart

Oh, oh, oh
I'll get him hot, show him what I've got
Oh, oh, oh
I'll get him hot, show him what I've got

Can't read my, can't read my
No he can't read my poker face
(She's got to love nobody)
Can't read my, can't read my
No he can't read my poker face
(She's got to love nobody)

P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face
(Mum mum mum mah)
P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face
(Mum mum mum mah)
"Well, what are you waiting for? I am an old man, and have no time for your falter! Come at me, if you will, for I do not sing songs of dastards!"
