So, in the early drafts of The Fellowship of the ring, Aragorn's role is occupied by a hobbit known as Trotter, a brown-faced ranger with a rather long nose. He is described as wearing wooden shoes, and was dressed in a "Dark rough brown cloth".

Trotter is of course still a ranger, and the "Dark rough brown Cloth" he is wearing might be interesting to those who recreate the Rangers.

fascinating, I guess that a "Dark rough brown Cloth" would be a poor quality wool of some kind?

Aragorn in the final revision is described as wearing "Rusty greens and browns", which we have interpreted to modern language as being "faded". Wool tends to acquire pips and other 'raised texture' over time due to rubbing, etc. After LOTS of use, the fibers can begin to pull apart or seem transparent as space stretches between threads. I'd interpret that as being worn wool, for sure.
