New version of my original Dunedain Star turtle brooch

Post by caedmon »

Started a new type of casting (green sand) today, and made this version of my original Dunedain Star Turtle Brooch.

I think that with a little care I can make this work really well.

That is AMAZING - am I seeing it right that it's in two metals? Or is that an artifact of the cleanup process?

The piece is pewter, and the bottom layer is copper plated. I use roman vitriol (Copper Sulfate) to deposit plate copper onto the pewter. It's been used since the 9th century, usually as a first step in the gilding process. (Gold plating holds better if there's a copper plate layer first.)

Oooh, very pretty! Honestly, this is really kinda selling me on the turtle design vs the cut-out circle that I had been imagining.

Incidentally, if you ever offer these for sale, even on a very limited basis... well, I’m going to have to try REALLY hard not to start developing a collection of various star-brooch interpretations

Yes, no pressure here but a small run would be most intriguing.

Yes, switching to green sand has allowed me to clear my last hurdle for medieval and LOTR brooches: historically accurate pins.

I'm very close to having several variations available.

Really nice work Caed, I've always liked the turtle brooch version of these. Gulli's was particularly nice too.
But the white fury of the Northmen burned the hotter, and more skilled was their knighthood with long spears and bitter. Fewer were they but they clove through the Southrons like a fire-bolt in a forest.

I do love this style also. Please know that I would also get in line for a production run.
