Looking for a particular leather scrap for sale/trade...

Post by Greg »

I'm in need of a single piece of cowhide (or similar material) that doesn't match my other hides, and I don't want to have to buy a whole hide from somewhere, or and I'm not finding any pieces on the leather guy that suit my needs currently...they're always hit-or-miss based on what they have in stock.

I need a piece that is, at bare minimum, 6.5" x 16.5" of ~5(or more) ounce cowhide, preferably tanned in such a way as to change appearance when scratched/stretched (leather guy calls this "pull up" leather, Tandy calls them "Stoned Oil Cowhide sides"...no one seems to know what it actually is). A mid-to-dark brown preferable.

I could pay, or we could work out some form of trade. Let me know what you've got...I won't do a deal without seeing pictures first, because I'm picky, fyi.

Thanks!

Tough parameters there... I miiiiiight have something... but honestly, I don't think it's heavy enough for what you need, and I doubt I have a piece that large left. Can I ask what it's for? Or would that be a super-closely-kept secret at the moment?

Greg,
I think I may have the peice you are looking for, let me get back to you and see if it will work size wise.

Super-closely-kept-secret right now. Sorry. I don't want to start revealing stunning revelations before I know that they aren't going to turn into time-wasting failures... *chuckles*

Thanks, Scott. Let me know if you can track it down.

OK Ranger Greg, I have found the peices I was thinking about.
They are heavy and somewhat stiff (like a five to seven oz tooling leather) however they feel more like a rough suede. Most definitely cow hyde and the peices are dark brown.
These scraps were from an old project and the hydes were most likely old even then, so these guys have seen some years. The one problem I see is the minimum size requirement. I will show you in the picture what I have and you are welcome to it, you just have to see if you can make do with peicing it or not.

Not sure if these pics will help much, shoot me a PM and let me know if you are interested.

Awwww. The finish and color are perfect...but yes, the size has to be right. Can't patch this one together. Thanks anyway!

Shoot! I thought you'd found some. I did see it on sale in a Tandy circular a while back, but no telling if it's still available.

I made my old waterskin out of something similar, but I think the scraps are long gone. I'll poke around the workshop this week to double check. I'm not optomistic though. :(

I need to run out to the leather shop in a nearby town that I used to frequent last time I lived here...but they rarely have what I'm looking for. Still searching on this one.

I don't know if they have exactly what you're looking for but this is where I get all my leather for my projects!
