I purchased this about 5 monthes ago and never posted a pic here yet.
I bought this from Bruce Brookhart, who researched and designed for Museum Replicas, before and after it's buy out by Windlass.
I no longer have most of my MRL catalogs (had received everyone since they opened) and don't recognize this knife. I believe it may have been a prototype that didn't get into production.

Sturdy enough for batoning and big enough for a backup weapon.

That's a very nice knife! It most certainly looks fit for a Ranger, with just enough aesthetic design to show the skill of the maker, yet sturdy enough to do the jobs that only a Ranger can. I agree with you, most likely a prototype. Is the handle bone?

Yes, it's fairly thck, if it was thin I worry, but it seems sturdy enough.

I like it! I wouldn't worry about the bone at all. Have you ever worked bone before? That crap is tough! Also, as a long standing watcher of the MRL catalog, I also do not recognize this knife. Too bad, it's a beauty.

I've had a bone hilted dagger but it was thin and I didn't trust it for any tough useage. I'll probably seal it, if it isn't already as I don't want it to crack with age.
Bruce still has a lot of good stuff at reasonable prices for example:

I like the Halflings sword on this page. There is many medieval pieces still left too:

It is true that bone doesn't quite have elasticity of antler or horn but at around 5 inches or so for the handle with the thickness it seems to be in the picture, I would not be too concerned.
Of coarse that being said if you ever did develope an unmanagle crack, it doesn't look like it would be dificult to replace either.

That's some good stuff on his site. That second from the bottom second from the right sword looks like the old Black Knightly sword MRL used to carry. I loved that sword!
