bare blades

A central place to talk about weapons and armour, as it relates to your kit. This is where you show it of or talk about making it. Discussing the relative merits of types of weapons goes in the WMA section.

Hey Pete!

What would you think about using this blank blade:

To mount this hardware to?:

I have always loved the beauty and ellagance of this set, found in a Finnish gravesite. I was thinking that the one handed tinker blank with fuller would be suitable, as the Norse often used foriegn blades that were plundered or commisioned of skillfull smiths and then added their own traditional furniture. So this may be more or less period SCA wise, and could be very Norse/Dwarven if looked at from the perspective of Middle Earth.

I have been wanting a sword for such a long time that would work for me and I think this may be a good selection to fit into my many interests.

Any thoughts, opinions out there?

Actually I've been waiting for the Hanwei Viking replacement blade to do just exactly that. I didn't realize KOA was carrying those furniture pieces. I was going to go through Quiet Press.

It will make a beautiful Viking sword. Go for it if you can find the blade. If the Hanwei blade doesn't become available anytime soon the next bet would be an old Windlass or Del Tin and mount it.

I forgot who had thembut there is a vendor out there who sell a similar styled chape and throat piece for the scabbard.

I just checked and the Viking replacement is back in stock at KOA. I'd have to sell off a few things before buying anything else. After the sale I had a few months ago I ended buying just about as much as I sold.

Kult of Athena is the one who has the one handed sword with fuller that I gave the link for, the furniture is, as you said, from Raymond's Quite press.

I did not know Koa had a specifically Norse style blade, I would like to see the difference between that and the fullered blade I put up. most likely a bit wider oa and a blunter tip with a tad less distil taper.

You can fiddle with the rotation nodes and handling before you finish building your sword too.

Slide the guard and pommel on, tape them in place, then wrap some cloth around the tang. If it doesn't feel right you can grind some of the inside of the pommel out to lighten it, or file the shoulders on the blade to make the tang longer. Having the parts to work with bare leaves you with some nice options.

If I had access to a shop I'd do the same myself.

Yup!
I found it when I accessed the site and looked under the heading, but the link from this site did not show the viking blank. It's a bit more expensive but also a bit more authentic for me and my SCA time period.
As for Dwarven Ringulf, it would be a fine, fine blade, dragon or troll hoard stuff no doubt, perhaps Dwarven-made for a mannish prince or chieftan of the Eothrame lost in the Upper Anduin Vales! That would certainly describe the decorative theme!

If anyone does give this a go, you might think about adding some wire to the grip in a spiral pattern about 3/4" apart over the leather.

This is an example of the wire I'm talking about:

It comes in a variety of guages.

One thing about the RQP pieces, they are VERY thick, something which doesn't come through on the pictures. OK if you like that, but I found them to be awkward.
