Here is a fun little project!

A lot of reenactment level work is about learning appropriate historical crafts and skills. This board is for all general skills that don't have their own forum.

Here is a fun little project!

Post by Ringulf »

There are few of us out there that have not ever wanted to make or own a cool helmet!
I seem to be endlessly fascinated by them and have made them in many different styles and out of many different materials. This instructables project was the mirror image of one I made from pickle barrel plastic (for Larping) and have always wanted to do in armor grade leather(10-12oz).

The Altuna helm is a great starting helm for a first time builder as it is entirely made of bands and strips. No need for dishing or welding and can be fastened in a myriad of ways depending on the material used to construct it. It is also relatively light and very well ventilated (a must for us sweaty dwarves).

I am going to put up a few pictures of the finished project in metal as well as some diagrams, but I was thinking it would be fun to do a Helm project like we did for the CS seax and all do our own rendition.

Metal, leather, plastic, makes no difference, they all will help you learn something about helm construction, you can add it to your kit, sell it or put it on a shelf but I think it would be a fun summer project!

And it seems as though this one has been picked up by every major vendor on the web!

A little too heavy for me but I like it. Thanks for the post!

The leather version could be done for you dyed in the wool Rangers! it would be fairly light and donned when one would be in iminent danger of fighting hand to hand! or for training puropses!

@ Ringulf - I will do my best to accept this challenge. Of course, as we all know, my spare time is pretty limited but I will attempt to finish by August.

I'm thinking of trying a medium not yet mentioned and very different. We see how it goes.

A bit of a cheat since the pieces are pre-cut, but it's an option for a similar style helm.
Still round the corner there may wait a new road or a secret gate and though I oft have passed them by a day will come at last when I shall take the hidden paths that run west of the moon, east of the sun.

I love that particular valsgard Pattern I would imagine someone also makes an Ultuna kit but just for starters my Ranger friends, I would try one of the altuna's in leather as a sparring helm or light feild helm. Of course you smiths go for the fence!
