First project post - Costrel!

Post by MasterStrong »

I'm awful when it comes to 'in progress' pictures. I get too caught up in my projects. That said, this one isn't quite done. I still need to add the strap.

Wow, that looks really good! Very polished looking. How much does it hold?

I realized I don't have a volume measuring device in my pantry, so I eyeballed it and was pleased to find that it holds a 750ml bottle of wine at about 2/3 full. I'll have to get an exact measurement at some point, but I'm confident it's a full liter.

Thanks all! I've actually made several of these over the years, all hand stitched, and they just keep getting better.

There are a few other people here on the boards who make or have made leather bottels and costrels, and have done a pretty phenomenal job. You've got to check out this thread about the collaborative costrel project by Ringulf and Caedmon. pretty stellar stuff:

That's awesome - I love the shape!

Did you turn / whittle your own plug?

I bookmarked that thread for more in depth review.

Unfortunately, no I didn't turn the plug myself. A friend of mine did several of them for me. I need a lathe so I can start doing them myself.

Haha, the shape reminds me of the big ones made out of a whole skin.

Almost like you used a whole squirrel or something to make yours. Very nice.

Whoa - those things are crazy!

...Also, now I kind of want a whole-squirrel-skin bota.

A few years back, a buddy and I case-skinned a rabbit (tail included) and stretched it over a wine bottle, so that the rabbit's mouth went around that of the bottle. 'Kissing the bunny bottle' made for a great conversation piece; but pouring from the bunny bottle into a cup brought to mind a rabbit projectile vomiting

Awesome job MasterStrong! Just checking in on the progress. Have you had a chance to finish it? I would love to see some more pics of the finished project.
