Building a longhouse

Post by wulfgar »

Today I just got home from a great experience. I have posted here before about the Roman fort and celtic village here in Arkansas, well this weekend we started another celtic longhouse. There were some modern tools used like a chainsaw and "mule" utility vehicle to tow logs out of the woods, but other than that everything else was done with draw knives, axes, and lots of muscle power.

These are the 20 foot rafter/stringers.

Cedar uprights in place, with the 40 foot sill beam resting on scaffolding. We peeled the posts and charred the ends, then they were placed in their holes on a bed of rock and sand before being filled in.

The framework is in place.

Most of the crew,,we did this in iron age kit. I am the one with the spear and shield..

There's still a lot more to do,,roof, wattle and daub walls, fire pits. There is already another longhouse in the celt camp but this one is much bigger 20'x38'
If anyone is interested in doing iron age celt or roman reenacting let me know. The Clash of Iron event is in April.

This looks amazing I would love to see how this will look when you finish it.

Keep close to Nature's heart... and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.

That is so incredibly AWESOME! Very cool!

Is it going to be in use all season long, into the winter? I bet it'd make a rockin' mead hall some dark winter. : )

We'll just have to find a way to get enough like-minded folks down there to fill it, then!

I think with all of the forum we can fill that longhouse in no time.

Anyone who is interested in doing an authentic Iron age Celt is welcome to attend the Clash event in April. They also have SCA events. Also, since I have worked there we May be able to swing a Ranger moot.

Wulfgar I would love to go to the Iron age celt in April but sadly I still have school going on but maybe in a few years when I can.
