Ah, that's good actually. If you review some of those techniques, with a knife in one hand, you might get a whole new perspective on them.

Such as, say, self defense techniques against someone who grabs one wrist with both hands.

Now why would anyone grab one wrist with both hands?

Maybe because that wrist is attached to a hand holding a knife that is approaching in a decidedly hostile fashion?

Anyway, the structure and movement you picked up then should serve you, very well.

'English Martial Arts' by Terry Brown is a great book

'English Swordsmanship' by Stephen Hand is another good one

I favor single handers over long swords but I have studied

Christian Toblers, 'Fighting with the German Longsword'

As well as the 'Knightly art of the longsword' by Peter Svard and David Lindholm. As some longsword techniques can be modified to singlehanders, especially techniques beginning with Ochs and Pflug. It helps to bring a bit of aggression/initiative into the English system. I've come to the German side of things by favoring single time defences. All that parry and riposte business isnt for me.

David, I saw that site some years ago, but I forgot about it. Thanks for posting. I'll look into it. I'd love to know how to use my Clontarf and I'm thinking of building a round shield some time in the near future.
