I will be considering it, but the tale has been published in more or less it's final form in a few other places, although it might be handy to have a version on it's own.

I think it'll be worth it just for the Alan Lee plates. Can't wait! :)

Yes, it's been published in its "final" form in the Silmarillion et al., but there are supposed to be new notes and some other additions that C.Tolkien has contributed from his father's writings that we didn't have access to before. Fingers crossed, there's a useful reference or two in there. Well worth the purchase, I'd say.

Mmm... If there's going to be some new material I might just have to get it!

The illustrations by Alan Lee in the Children of Hurin were fantastic, so I think I've been convinced. :)

I did - it's quite nice! The Alan Lee plates and pencil drawings are gorgeous of course.

I was expecting a filled-out prose version of the lay - this is not that. Rather, it's a study of the changes to the story the Professor made over the years prior to publication, some reminiscences from Christopher Tolkien, and of course the lay itself. Also some brief notes on the state of Middle-earth at the time of the narrative, and a short index of all the peoples and places mentioned for ease of getting context.

It rather reminds me of "Pioneer Girl" in that it's a look behind the scenes of a narrative you already know. If you enjoy the RotK Appendices or the History of Middle Earth series, it's perfect for you. If you're more after just the tale, well - you'll love the pictures. :)

In the preface, Christopher Tolkien anknowledges that at 93, it's likely his last book. He said that his father felt that 'the Silmarillion' contained three tales worthy of stand-alone books: "The Children of Hurin," "Beren and Luthien," and "The Fall of Gondolin." I wonder if he'll instruct some heir of the estate to edit and publish the Gondolin story.

That would be awesome.

Oh... that would be a perfect capstone - I hope so much he does that!

Goodness - how fortunate we have been to have Christopher Tolkien carrying the torch these many decades. Think how much could have been lost!

Fall of Gondolin has some great references, including a need-wallet mention and cloak usage descriptions. I'd be ALL over that.
