A lot of reenactment level work is about learning appropriate historical crafts and skills. This board is for all general skills that don't have their own forum.

Leatherwork: Diapering (pic heavy)

Post by caedmon »

A Norse decorative style similar to but different than celtic knotwork is diapering.

When making my 14th c. girdle purse, I noted that the final stitching looked a lot like diapering. Anyway I did some work on it and re-did the stitch and figured I'd share.

Yeah, The kidney purse is WAY to high medieval to use in a Middle Earth context, but I think the diaper stitch is just right.

I don't see that. Seems all right to me.

I see where caedmon's coming from I think. The things that particularly set it into the real 14th c. to me are the quatrefoil shape to the top opening and the sub-pouches on the front inside panel. (Is that center pocket for a wax tablet?!)
It's fantastic work, of course!

We all have our own mental images, of course. Middle earth "feels" more 11th-12th century to me - at least amongst the realms of men - but obviously none of us are ever going to completely agree!

BTW, have you seen Nathan's Workshop's take on Thorin's pouch from the Hobbit movies?

I think that vaguely-Norse-ish aesthetic really works for Dwarven stuff, especially when it's not overly-angled up.

Jawdropping!

That's a really cool stitch. I may have to practice that one.

Amazing work caedmon! That stitch is super cool!

I do agree that this hobby is fairly weighted towards personal opinion, but I think it's more to do with culture. I think that certain high medieval things could work for elvish artefacts and perhaps Gondorian to a certain extent, but I agree that most other mannish cultures are 11th, 12th, and maybe 13th century medieval (depending). I definitely agree that Dwarven is very norse, but that may just be my jackson-influenced bias :P I also would assert that Woodmen, Dale, and Laketown cultures are Norse inspired. I believe that the professor even had their root languages based on Old Norse.

I bloody well love Thorin's belt purse. I covet it!!!
I wish only for green trees, cool wine, a strong bow, and a swift arrow
