That is amazing.
Goodness, you've come so very far! I remember those early pictures to, and here I think you look more real than anything WETA's ever put together.
Truly truly inspirational.
Regarding name - hunh! I'd never known that about "Gregory" - very cool.
A couple other rough renditions that might be easier on the tongue:
Tiron / Tirion - "guard-man"
Tirbor / Tiribor - "faithful guard"
Tirin - "watchful mind"
I'm kinda fond of something in the Tirin direction b/c of its similarity to Turin, but I'd need to do more research to verify the grammar /mutation is correct.
(I actually think Tirion is better yet, but sadly that's pretty off the table for the next generation or two. )
If that seems too similar to your chosen surname: perhaps the surname could be in Weston or English-substituting-for-Common? Similar to "Beleg Strongbow" in formulation?

Greg and I joined about a month apart, being the 26th and 25th members, respectively. Even having a head start, I can't compare in terms of kit and completeness!

That's easy to explain. We all have kept you too busy working on our stuff to be able to work on your own! New rule: No more Odigan commissions for the next 6 months so he can work on his kit in prep for fall!Odigan wrote:Greg and I joined about a month apart, being the 26th and 25th members, respectively. Think anyone'd notice if you blatantly etched it in runes on a blade?Odigan wrote:This is definitely getting etched in Tengwar somewhere!Greg wrote:Justkiddingnotreallysorrynotsorry

Wow! Such an amazing and complete kit! Congratulations!
I hope my kit will be as well thought out and cohesive as yours one day!
I loved seeing your historical and Tolkien influences for each item. But what are your thoughts on not carrying an axe and instead just carrying your seax? Do you find that for firewood duties that the knife serves well enough?
Names can be hard, I lucked out when I translated my name in to Sindar I was actually able to find a translation that was quite close to my real name. But I do think that it is more important for you to be drawn to your persona name, rather than emulating your modern one. Especially if you seem to be struggling with it.
Once again, fantastic job!

I wish only for green trees, cool wine, a strong bow, and a swift arrow

Depends on what your firewood needs are. Are you trying to sustain a cookfire, or are you trying to heat your shelter? Are you heating a lean-to for the night, or are you stocking wood for the winter?Ruinar Hrafnakveðja wrote:What are your thoughts on not carrying an axe and instead just carrying your seax? At my persona's homestead, there indeed would/will be/already is a full-hafted axe. Would I carry it when wandering? No. Firewood only needs to be split (generally) when you're looking for dry, small material to start things up with...you can usually get your fire hot enough to light round pieces soon after.

Ah that makes sense. Up north where I am you pretty much need an axe or a saw to get anything accomplished in the firewood department. There are ways you can get around not having one, but then there's the energy you expend....Greg wrote: Depends on what your firewood needs are. I guess a lot of it depends on what you are doing, where you are going, not to mention your persona's culture and how many enemies might be sharing the wilderness with you

Re: 3rd Age Dunedain Ranger - Complete Functional Kit Breakdown
I carry a tomahawk with a hammer poll, but I rarely if ever use it for firewood. If I want to split wood, I use my knife or messer with a hammer stick. Much safer, and much more precise. But I do find my hawk useful in cutting medium-heavier pieces of wood for construction or cutting fir boughs for an insulating mattress.
Happy Hunting

Man, I am in love with this kit! It looks like the real deal. You could be dropped in Mirkwood and get by fine with this set up.
Great job and thanks for the example!

So I'm a bit late to the party here but Greg, do you still have the photos that accompanied this breakdown? It seems they are not longer available and I'd very much like to take a gander. Thanks!

Let me see what I can do...I've switched computers since this was posted and haven't recovered my pic folders yet.

Sad to say it seems like quite a few peoples pictures are disappearing. I was trying to look at your bow construction thread too and that was all gone.
