A new addition
A new addition
So I was lucky enough to snag a Hanwei Tinker Great Sword of War recently for an extremely good deal. For some time now I’ve been wanting to revamp my day to day ranger sword into something more plain and common.
To rework the piece I reprofiled the tip which pulled it from the XIII family into the XII family which is my main preference of blade these last few years. I also sanded the appalling shiny stainless fittings to a 400 grit finish and aged them. The overly long and fat handle was them sanded down and rewrapped in walnut dyed veg tan. When reassembling I took a good inch off of the overall handle length until I had enough of the tang protruding for peening and assembled the piece.
For the scabbard I just recycled the fiberglass core it came with and did the wrap in walnut dyed goatskin with a by knife attached for good measure. The knife is just plain 1075 ground from stock and then heat treated. The handle scales are camel bone dyed to compliment the rest of the package.

Re: A new addition
Very different but enjoyable. The Odin is the better blade but the Hanwei is the better character piece. The original intent of the Odin was to be a family heirloom piece of which I am now transitioning it to. I have however commissioned a bare blade from John that I intend to make the hilt fittings for. When it is complete it will become my new full time blade. This piece is there to fill the gap while the new piece in progress.TaylorSteiner wrote:Wow nice. How do you like compared to your Odin blade?

Wow! I really like the rustic direction you went with the scabbard - it's got just the right amount of "aping the high styles of elder days, but rendered in crude materials" to really sell it as 3rd Age Dunedain.
Nicely done.

It's perfect! Love it!
I understand the heirloom piece deal. Yours is definitely one such blade well deserving of semi-retirement.

Now the sword shall come from under the cloak.

Nice work
Gimli: It's true you don't see many Dwarf-women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for Dwarf-men.
Aragorn: It's the beards.

Re: A new addition
I know this is a bit of an old thread but first off, this is great I love the look of this, and secondly I was wondering what you did to age the stainless fittings after you sanded them? I’ve just used watered down washes of paint on mine but I’m looking for a more permanent solution that won’t rub off and wondered if you’d found it. Thanks!
