Been awhile since we had a good old-fashioned forum build along! Things are so easy to post to other social media that I'm afraid this beautiful format doesn't get the attention it deserves. I've had this stave sitting around for far too long. Let's get cracking!
She's preeetty straight. There's one significant bend about a foot from one end (right by the umbrella hole in the table pictured), so we'll be steaming this one straight at some point during this process...I'm still deciding when I want to attack that.
Beautiful tight grain! Over 30 rings per inch!
I had some help today with de-barking the back:
...but had to step in before things got too far out of hand:
After basic de-barking, we got the centerline marked in, and followed that up with parallel lines at 5/8" to each side of the centerline to trim the sides down to.
Got things shaved down to the initial side marks with the drawknife and a spokeshave. We're doing preeeetty well for day one!

I love how attentive he is to the process.
But the white fury of the Northmen burned the hotter, and more skilled was their knighthood with long spears and bitter. Fewer were they but they clove through the Southrons like a fire-bolt in a forest.
