Reference Library
Hello everyone,
It just came to my attention that I should make a proper offer of access to the reference library I have hoarded away over many years. Essentially if you are after a book, paper or anything else from the early middle ages (Anglo Saxon,Viking age) then I am likely to either have it or be able to find it. Sometimes I can't but it's not often.
I try to respect copyright if the book is still in print but so many historical resources simply aren't available anymore or are cost prohibitive when you only want a tidbit of information.
Anyhoo, feel free to ask below or to reach out via PM if there is anything you need.

But the white fury of the Northmen burned the hotter, and more skilled was their knighthood with long spears and bitter. Fewer were they but they clove through the Southrons like a fire-bolt in a forest.

Re: Reference Library
That is very generous, thank you!
.. now I'm wondering what questions to ask.

What a generous offer! Thank you! Let's see, I don't have any specific titles I'm searching for yet but I'm always on the hunt for general knowledge on a few things.
Do you having anything on the following?
- 6-7th century Britons/Welsh? I know you're a Saxon kinda guy so this is a long-shot.
- Early medieval leatherworking? I have the report from Anglo-Scandinavian York but that's mostly 10th-11th century. I can't imagine things changing that much but I'm always on the lookout for earlier stuff.
- Articles on cross-cultural influences or designs? I'm really interested in frontiers and groups away from centers of power interacting with other culture groups and producing something new and local.
- This is a new one but I'd like to know more about early Franks/Merovingians. Talking with Udwin made me realize that my knowledge on that group has a gap in it and most of the stuff I'm finding is in French.
- Anything on hunting and archery in the early medieval.
I realize not having a specific article in mind is a pain so sorry about that.

As I'm sure you know it's a very sparse period for.... well anything really. Papers? Books? or just anything I have?- 6-7th century Britons/Welsh? I know you're a Saxon kinda guy so this is a long-shot.
I have a few books here I will sort out and get you drive links for.- Early medieval leatherworking? I have the report from Anglo-Scandinavian York but that's mostly 10th-11th century. I can't imagine things changing that much but I'm always on the lookout for earlier stuff

A tricky one for the time periods we reenact, I seem to recall something that might interest you though.

As with your first request, are you looking for an overall view in a single book or specific sites, finds?
- Anything on hunting and archery in the early medieval.
Not much exists from my period but I will have a poke about.

Re: Reference Library
Wow that's a rabbit hole. I like searching for things for people because I usually end up reading the material myself and so learn more as I go.
You're really going to have to narrow your searches down as there's just too much to swim through. I have grabbed what looked likely but can dig more.
For the Britons I grabbed a few articles and a book
Petts - Turner (2011). Early Medieval Northumbria: Kingdoms and Communities, AD 450–1100

Härke - Material culture as Myth

Härke - Invisible Britons, Gallo-Romans and Russians. Perspectives in Culture Change

Härke - Anglo-saxon Immigration and Ethnogenesis

For the leatherworking I have two really good texts for you by Esther Cameron. Both of them are considered excellent sources and I'm sure will be of interest to others here.

For hunting I have a few different papers from the same book - Hunting in Northern Europe until 1500AD
Early regulations on hunting in the barbarian law codes of the Early Middle Ages

Paulsen - From Stone Age hunting bows to medieval weapon of war. Selected examples of bows and arrows in the North
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KwSlYR ... sp=sharing
Iversen - The name of the game. The changing role of hunting on royal land in Norway during the Middle Ages
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oSxiu0 ... sp=sharing
And lastly for my good friend Taurandir....
Dobiat - Early falconry in central Europe on the basis of grave finds, with a discussion of the origin of falconry

Re: Reference Library
Eofor, I don't even where to begin with my thanks. This is an absolute treasure hoard and it will be a grand time reading through each one. I completely understand the need to narrow the search parameter though. I just find that even after three years or so studying the period, that I don't know what I don't know. So I appreciate the extra effort from you and ask for your forgiveness. I'll make sure to be more precise in the future.Eofor wrote: ↑Fri Mar 04, 2022 11:32 pm Wow that's a rabbit hole.
