New Face at the Inn

Post by Manveruon »

Hello all! I just wanted to post a quick introduction up here. My name is Michael Sheridan, and I have finally, after several attempts, made it onto the forums. Let me tell ya' I had quite the time of it, heh. But I persisted because this seemed to be an interesting set of people, and I wanted to be able to participate now and again instead of just lurking. To be honest, I'll probably end up lurking most of the time anyway, but this at least gives me the option of joining in the discussions (and perhaps contests) if I feel the urge :)

So anyway, about me...
Well, I was born in San Diego, CA, but have lived most my life in Golden, Colorado, which is just outside Denver (and incidentally, if there are any other Colorado rangers on these forums, I'd be very interested in saying hello!). I must admit that I've never actually read the Lord of the Rings trilogy all the way through (shameful, I know), but I have read the Hobbit several times, and I am currently making my third or fourth earnest attempt on the Trilogy via audiobook (which has become my primary method of absorbing literature of late).
I first became interested in Tolkien's work with the Peter Jackson films (yes, I'm one of those), but I have since developed an interest in the literature behind them, as well as Medieval history. I started to make an Aragorn costume based on the film version back in something like '02, but never actually finished. This is something I hope to remedy as well. However, lately I've gotten very attached to the idea of creating my own, unique ranger persona, which I am also designing to be somewhat interchangeable with a turn-of-the-13th-Century woodsman kit (King Richard/King John era, specifically. think Robin Hood).
I have a love for archery, and for beautiful, functional, masterfully crafted swords - although to tell the truth I only own some cheap wall-hangers, unless you count my Windlass pirate cutlass, which is only slightly better.
Which brings me to the other big geek-out of mine: pirates. I actually jumped on that bandwagon with the PotC films (yeah, so maybe there's a pattern here...), and ended up becoming one of the very first Jack Sparrow impersonators in the country (and, if I do say so myself, one of the best). That became such an obsession that I basically dropped the whole medieval/fantasy thing for quite a while. I even started (or helped start, at any rate) the first ever pirate convention in Denver. yes, you read that right. A pirate convention in Denver. Yes, I know we're landlocked :P
Anyway, after several years of pirate overload, I'm finally coming "back to my roots," so to speak, and finding a lot of satisfaction in the ranger thing again. So here I am!

And that's about it! I'm glad to finally be officially on these boards, and I hope I can lend an interesting personality to the mix! Cheers!

Hello welcome to the group. Robin Hood is what first got me interested in Archery, Swords, and Medieval History.Don't worry about having gotten interested in The Lord Of The Rings via the movies I'm sure you're not the only one.Oh and we love pics.

Welcome Manveruon! There is absolutely nothing wrong with loving the movies and being inspired by them! Also, audiobooks are a great resource. All my most recent reading of LOtR were on cassette tape, and when my new car didn't have a tape player, I passed on my tapes to someone who would enjoy them. Now I need to replace them with cd's. So it's all good. You'll probably find a bunch of us love both Robin Hood and Pirates of the Carribean. I know I do! Btw, the most recent BBC Robin Hood series is great fun, and I heartily recommend it!

Greetings Manveruon!

So glad you finally took the plunge!
I was the same way and lurked for about a year!
I was a Tolkien enthusiast since I was about 8 and have never stopped loving it, but my interests in Robin Hood go back even further. (BTW just got a Mongolian horsebow just like the "Sarecen" bow used by the BBC Robin Hood for my 23 year old son and we love it!)
It took me till I was almost 50 to get into the young adult series by Flanigan, "The Ranger's Apprentice", that I spend a great deal of time with now. I also Am a "Ranger" of the Kingdom of Trimaris here in the SCA in Florida.

So as you can see you have fallen into a trap that many of us have merrily found ourselves swirling to the bottom in (the heck with that help me find my car keys and we can drive outa here...) oops wrong story.

Anyway, welcome! ask questions! take pictures! make comments! be at home and enjoy!

Thanks very much for the very warm welcome, everybody!

Yes, that's one of the things that attracted me to this forum in the first place - the general love of archery. I've been personally interested in it for quite a few years, and I started practicing a bit with the SCA back around '04 or '05. Did a bit with the Society in general back then, but that's about when the pirate obsession kicked in, and I sort of dropped the SCA for quite a while. Plus, was put off by the cliquishness and social climbing which seems to run rampant in parts of the Outlands (not sure how other kingdoms compare in that regard). But that's when I started working the Colorado Renaissance Festival as Jack Sparrow, and I've been doing that off and on since the '05 season. It's a crazy fun job, but it gets kind of tiring after a while. Truly, if I never have to put eye makeup on again I will be a happy man, heh. Never thought I'd have to say that.

But now, because of the burnout I've recently experienced with pirate stuff (largely related to trying to run BrethrenCon, that pirate convention I mentioned), I'm really coming back around to medieval and fantasy stuff, as previously stated. I got my old Woodbows.com bow out again, and even bought a new hickory-backed-hickory longbow from an excellent bowyer at the ren faire. In the last year or so I've also started making my own arrows, of which I am inordinately proud. I'm using spined cedar shafts, white, shield-cut turkey feathers, and artificial sinew for the wrapping. I wanted a really authentic medieval look without spending a ton on hand forged arrowheads, so I put Ace target bodkins on them, and they've served me quite well.

I'll try and scrounge up some pictures here ASAP. My current ranger kit is FAR from finished, but I ended up wearing the most recent incarnation of it this Halloween, which is where my avatar comes from. Sadly, I only got a couple not-so-great photos of it at my girlfriend's work, when I came to pick her up, but I think I'll be getting some more in a slightly more "woodsy" setting next week.

Okay, here we go! I put a ton of pics in here for ya'.

First, the only pics I got of myself this Halloween dressed in Ranger/Robin Hood gear (sorry for the poor focus):

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e173/ ... CN1742.jpg

Next, a couple somewhat blurry cell-phone shots of my arrows:

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e173/ ... rrows1.jpg

Then we've got a couple super old ones of me. First is me in pseudo Celtic garb at an '05 SCA event, and the next is the furthest I've ever gotten on my Strider costume, at Dragon*Con '08:

And no, the shirt isn't really that pink, it just looks that way in the camera flash, unfortunately.

Then a few links to pics of me as Captain Jack... just, y'know, cause...

Jack as "Judge Smith" from the latest installment:

And lastly, one of me in my original pirate garb, "Captain Jack McCool"

Mae Govannen! Welcome to the forum!

Your Ranger (and pirate) outfits looks outstanding! I especially love the way your mantle looks. I been meaning to make one of my own for a while now. Would you happen to have a pattern or any tips for a fellow Ranger?
