Snakes and ropes

Post by appalachianranger »

I recently watched both the original and the remake of True Grit, and was struck by the fact that Rooster Cogburn placed a rop around himself in his sleep so that snakes would not attack him in his sleep.
Is this proven to be an affective deterrent to slithery sleepmates?

I think this was a popular belief at the time. I used to know an old lady, sort of an adopted aunt, who told stories of moving to Montana as a young bride in the early 1900s and raising sheep. As Aunt Mary told it, cowboys would surround their bedroll with a lariat because it was thought that rattlesnakes would not crawl across the rope. She insisted that it had to be a horsehair rope. Not just any rope would do.

My personal thoughts are that it's a load of hooey. Aunt Mary had some great stories, though.

There is actually no issue with snakes. Most of them are fun to have around...unless your wife doesn't like them. Only have issues with the poisonous ones.
Still round the corner there may wait a new road or a secret gate and though I oft have passed them by a day will come at last when I shall take the hidden paths that run west of the moon, east of the sun.

I usually don't have a problem with a snake as long as I know where it is. Now waking up with it in my bed may be a bit disconcerting.
