Here's my most recent finished piece
Here's my most recent finished piece
This one is going to a friend who is giving it to his boss for Christmas. It was fun to make though it took some thought as I have never done an antler handle before. The client left much of the design and how-to up to me but gave important input on what he thought we would like when I gave him a choice. So, anyway, since we all know everyone puts up with ramblings just to get to the pics ( ) here are the pics:
Now for some stats:
Overall length: 9 1/4"
Blade length: 4 11/16"
Blade width: 1 1/2" at the spike of the ricasso.
Weight: A hefty 7.5 oz
Materials: 3/16" circular saw blade steel provided by the client.
Handle: White tailed deer antler provided by the client, walnut, leather spacer and brass pin.
I was really surprised by the weight of this knife. This was made by stock removal, heat treated and quenched in veg oil Tempered for two 1-hour cycles in the oven at 450* F. Any questions or comments are more then welcome.

Beautiful my friend! I particularly like the way the handle is done!

Thanks everyone. I personally think this is my best knife yet.
Ringulf: I thought for a long time about how to do the handle. Even after I decided how to do it, it took me a while to get the nerve to execute it.
Pete: I used a filing jig I found on youtube to make the lines. The mistake I made with your knife is avoided on this one because the flats are not convex. I WILL be using that trick again.

I like the length versus width of the blade itself- nice and thick. Great, rustic and eminently usable.

Thanks everyone. It has a very rugged look to it. The steel was nearly 1/4" thick when I started. Lost a little to the file and a little more to the forge when I ht'ed. Unfortunately this one will most likely be a collection piece; the new owner is a collector.
I'm hoping its sister knife has survived. The edge was pretty thin when I heat treated and tempered and it turned into a little bit of a wave. Maybe I can file it out. I don't know. I might throw up a pic tomorrow to see if anyone has any suggestions.

The knife looks great. Really like the antler handle!

Love the shape of the blade...nice.
In the darkest part of Sherwoods glade, in the thickest part of the wood, there are those who say, can still be seen, the ghost of Robin Hood.
