I saw that on Facebook and it is amazing! Kinda puts it all in perspective :)

If you think those images are cool, it gets better.

These images are screenshots from within a planet-rendering program called "Outerra".

In short, if you have this program, you can "run" all over that map of Middle Earth. No orcs to worry about, and no buildings (currently), but the map is being worked on all of the time. This is just the latest release, which still has some bugs to be worked out (particularly in Mordor, which currently looks like a desert rather than an ashen wasteland, but I forgive them.)

In short, if you want to see what it can REALLY do...

Kudos goes to the first person who can accurately guess where the "camera" is at the beginning of that video.

Well, you're north of the Gulf of Lune, somewhere near the Blue Mountains... I'm guessing around where Thorin's dwarven colony would be?

Indeed! Foothills of the Blue Mountains!

Once I've de-fragged our compy a bit, I'm going to download the program and do some exploring with this latest map rendering. I can't wait to see if you can actually wander the paths of Mirkwood, etc...

Just an update on this, apparently the goal is to recreat in 1:1 scale the whole of Middle-earth.
