Leather Boot Spats

Post by Daerir »

I've been looking all over places but I must not know any good ones because I can only find the fake suede costume ones. Can someone point me in the right direction for real leather boot spats?

NOTE: I found something called Half chaps, are these the same kind of thing?

Half chaps are usually used for riding - they cover the calf to the ankle with a strap to go under the boot, but they don't cover the top of the foot. Searching for "leather gaiters" may get you more of what you want.

There are more sites out there that sell them, this is just a sample.

I was looking at these ones, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GW ... _i=desktop

I want it to be knee high, and all the spats I find are really little. To buy a pair of handmade leather gaiters will run me close to $150 and for that price I can just buy boots! I figured that the half chaps are a close replacement.

You could look to making a set of woodland indian style leggings. Just cut the flap off, and you could ad a tongue type gusset to the front, with a loop to go under your foot.

I am on the left. I made mine out of german tanned hide from Crazy Crow. I need to ass the gusset to the foot to cover my moccasins better.
You could also make them out of wool or canvas,,although canvas isn't that great.

Here's another sot of them. There is a tie that connects them to a leather belt around my waist, and I wear a breechcloth with them, but they can be made to fit over trousers.

Crazy Crow makes a pretty reasonably priced kit for leather half-leggings - http://www.crazycrow.com/mm5/merchant.m ... 30-100-000

I don't know if it's any good, though.

Those are pretty cool.

Point of interest: the boots Legolas wears in the PJ Lord of the Rings films aren't actually boots at all, but are actually just a pair of plain low shoes combined with wrap-around gaiters of a vaguely similar design to the ones Taurinor posted. With the right materials they might not be too difficult to make.

Actually, the big issue with half chaps is that they usually zip closed and have elastic panels, no good for "getting medieval." ;-)

You can look up putties from WWII as well.
