A lot of reenactment level work is about learning appropriate historical crafts and skills. This board is for all general skills that don't have their own forum.

knife sheath project

Post by bjaurelio »

For Christmas my wife gave me a Mora 612. The knife is great, but the sheath leaves a lot to be desired. I want to make one from leather that would feel at home in Middle Earth. Looking around on the internet, it's hard to find anything that's both not modern looking with lots of rivets and a big, boxy design or that doesn't look completely amateurish. I know someone on here would be able to direct me to a pattern or method of construction that will look both nice and medieval.

Link to the knife on Amazon for pictures. http://www.amazon.com/Morakniv-Classic- ... B003Z5GRUY

I'd go with a plain old centerseam that goes most of the way up the handle, but you may need to trim back the guard for that.

Centerseams are easier than you think - just make the standard kind that wraps over the spine and sews up the edge - no need for a welt.
Then get it good and wet and pliable, and rotate it 90 degrees around the knife so the seam goes up the back.

Edit - a couple interesting links:

The centerseam looks really easy and perfect for what I was envisioning. This will also give me the opportunity to start practicing tooling. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Even though I started this project a while back, I'm finally getting around to finishing it. Here are current pictures. After it dries around the knife, the last steps will be to crease designs, dye, and add a button for the belt loop.
