Ranger huts
Some friends and I went on a hike yesterday to do some scouting for primitive hunt in October. We hike two miles into the Ouachita trail to check out this shelter and water availability. The Ouachita trail starts in Oklahoma and goes for 233 miles into Arkansas through the Ouachita mountains, ending near Little Rock. There are several of these shelters along the trail.

Re: Ranger huts
That is awesome! Makes me wish I could just gather my gear and start walking.
...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.
Re: Ranger huts
Love it. Kind of what I imagine a typical waystation looking like.
"Lonely men are we, Rangers of the wild, hunters – but hunters ever of the servants of the Enemy."

Re: Ranger huts
There are similar such huts along the Appalachian Trail. Very nice when it's driving rain or a bit cold. I've read that they tend to get mice in cold weather and mosquitoes in hot weather.

Agreed, very much a great hidden Ranger oasis type of thing. I can see ledgers where Rangers scribe their names and dates and supplies deposited or taken

Re: Ranger huts
That would be a good idea and perhaps once the snows have melted have various rangers check on them to maintain them.

I understand that in Finland, they have lean-tos like this called Laavus. They are usually created so a fire can be built in front of them. It's probably as old as Arda:

Re: Ranger huts
I always thought a Laavu was a tipi like tent or structure.

They can be is they are spelled Lavvu instead of Laavu.wulfgar wrote:I always thought a Laavu was a tipi like tent or structure.

Odigan and I spent the night in such a shelter two Octobers back on our Tecumseh trail trek. Rather comfy. Ranger-ish in use, though I rather think a ranger waytation would make use of some earthen walls in addition to rough-hewn logs.

Haha, the point is that this design seems to be widespread. There are many huts in the Alps for use by mountaineers for instance.ineffableone wrote:They can be is they are spelled Lavvu instead of Laavu.wulfgar wrote:I always thought a Laavu was a tipi like tent or structure.

But if we copy and paste that into the ME Ranger world, we can certainly imagine these as temporary way-stations.

Another cool idea for Ranger Way Stations, and a bit more stealth would be torvkåta or Game Shelters. Used by charcoal makers in Sweden and Finland.

Thanks for the sites- it probably won't be until next year, but I'm either going to build an 'Appalachian trail' style hut or one of these Scandinavian ones up the hill from my 'medieval inn' and I'm really up in the air about which one to build.
Input from folks here would be welcome.

What is the winter weather like for the region?Straelbora wrote: Thanks for the sites- it probably won't be until next year, but I'm either going to build an 'Appalachian trail' style hut or one of these Scandinavian ones up the hill from my 'medieval inn' and I'm really up in the air about which one to build.

If it doesn't get too much snow, the AT style hut would likely be the easier build.
If you get decent snow fall however, the Scandinavian style would likely be a bit better shelter and have more strength to carry the show load. They also have the benefit of internal heating and a door.
