cheap source of Highland horn?

A lot of reenactment level work is about learning appropriate historical crafts and skills. This board is for all general skills that don't have their own forum.

cheap source of Highland horn?

Post by R.D.Metcalf »

I love highland cattle horns they are thick walled and sound amazing but one supplier i found on the web was asking $40.00 a peice for *raw* horn. that strikes me as a bit steep. anyone else know of a supplier?

I just checked out Boone Trading Co. They have horns, but it didn't specifically say they are from highland cattle, so I don't think I'd put my trust in that.

I'll check with them and see how thick those horn walls are. I may be alright going with their unfinished cowhorns the price is definitely right 8)
alot of finished horns available today are sanded to thin IMO.

Many thanks, Eric.

Our local Ben Franklin's has longhorns at 39.00 a horn, which seems way over-priced to me, and they look too sanded as well. Good luck with the horn search. Be sure to post pics of the finish product!

No problem. Hope it works out for you. If not, let us know where you find it.
Hmm, as I was typing this I remembered there is a cattle rancher not too far from here. I wonder if he has any horns around and how much they would cost. Also, how to get ahold of him.
That may be a project for when I am laid off again- besides finding a new job.
