That is fascinating - how wonderful to see an illustration from period of it being done.
What are the white things? A kind of primitive match / ember catcher thing?

The white lines? They look to be either some kindling, or perhaps
spalls to my eyes.

Good day Elleth. My best guess would be that these are spunks, sulphur tipped matches.
